This research intends to explore the social factors behind the use of the linguistic forms “eríh” and “soi”, as alternatives to “eres” in the verbal paradigm of the verb “ser” in Spanish spoken in Santiago de Chile. 18 subjects were investigated, belonging to homogeneous age, sex and socio-cultural groups. Results show that the newer form “eríh” is preferred by young women belonging to a middle socio-educational level. Subjects belonging to the lower classes, and also those in the upper age group seem to prefer the linguistic form “soi”, and age was the parameter showing the highest incidence.
