Resumen

Con mayor conciencia y reflexividad en la toma de decisiones, las personas que diseñan entornos digitales pueden reparar el daño causado por el diseño digital y mejorar la experiencia de quienes han sufrido marginación en línea. Este acto de reparación del daño ocasionado por malas decisiones de diseño —ya sea tomadas con buenas intenciones o por ignorancia—, es necesario en un mundo donde la tecnología, la exclusión y el trauma son omnipresentes. Este artículo ofrece ejemplos de daños digitales que diseñadoras y diseñadores deben reconocer, comprender y evitar reproducir. Se explica el concepto de diseño informado por el trauma y se presentan dos enfoques prácticos que las personas que diseñan pueden utilizar para informarse de mejor manera sobre el trauma y reparar el daño que ocasionan al crear sitios web, aplicaciones y otras experiencias digitales.

Melissa Eggleston, North Carolina State University

Profesora adjunta de Diseño, Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill. Obtuvo un máster en Comunicación por la Universidad de Carolina del Norte en Chapel Hill y cursa estudios doctorales en la Facultad de Diseño de la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte, donde aborda la intersección entre trauma y tecnología. Es diseñadora de experiencia de uso (UX) e investigadora. Con 15 años de experiencia en el sector tecnológico, actualmente trabaja para Digital Service, una iniciativa de los Centros de Servicios de Medicare y Medicaid de los Estados Unidos. En 2017, obtuvo fondos de Aquent Design for Good para aplicar principios informados por el trauma al sitio web de una agencia que aborda la violencia doméstica. Desde entonces ha diseñado para personas que han experimentado violencia interpersonal, trata de personas, consumo abusivo de sustancias, trastorno por estrés postraumático y enfermedades mentales graves.

Lesley-Ann Noel, North Carolina State University

Profesora asistente de la Facultad de Diseño de la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte. Tras formarse como diseñadora industrial en la Universidad Federal de Paraná, obtuvo un máster en Administración de Empresas por la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales y un doctorado en Diseño por la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte. Es codirectora del Pluriversal Design Special Interest Group de la Design Research Society y fue editora invitada de Diseña (con F. M.C. van Amstel y R. F. Gonzatto; n°21 y n°22: “Diseño, opresión y liberación”). Es autora de Design Social Change (Ten Speed Press, 2023) y una de las coeditoras de The Black Experience in Design (con A. H. Berry, K. Walters, J. Rittner, P. Laker y K. Collie; Allworth, 2022). Ha creado varias herramientas de diseño para la reflexión crítica, como “The Designer’s Critical Alphabet” y “Positionality Wheel”.
