Abstract

The Spanish American essay of the 20th century reveals a marked bias against technology, perhaps as a reaction to the Positivism and alleged materialism of the previous century. Ever since José Enrique Rodó’s Ariel intellectuals have advanced a secular notion of the “spirit” to oppose the pervasive and growing presence of technology in human life.
